3 Deadly Search Engine Marketing Sins

My inbox this week provided glaring examples of three all too common rookie search engine marketing mistakes. What you could call three deadly search engine marketing sins. Starting with ===> Inadequate Keyword Research Hey! If youre going to spend hours developing a web site, isnt it smart to invest some time to insure youre focusing on the most traffic laden keywords? Especially when typically the plural form of a keyword phrase generates way more traffic than the singular form. For example "dog dishes" rather than "dog dish". Yet just this week I was asked to look at a site that had focused on the singular form. Evidently the owner hadnt bothered to do any digging to make sure that was their best keyword move. Look, youll never know for sure unless you research it. Besides, you can access Wordtracker, the tool of choice for what? a measly $7 a day. Even better heres a quick and dirty way to get the most out of that day. Search for your target keyword in...

Key Words - they will find you on the web

Keywords are what people give a search engine to find what they are looking for on the web. You can define your key words before you even start your website. Say there are a lot of competing web pages mentioning your product - how should a search engine put these pages in order of relevance to a search? Say some pages contained the word once, and some contained the word ten times, and some contained the word between two and nine times. If all other factors (e.g. number of links from other web pages) were equal, search engines would list those pages containing the word ten times first, followed by those with the word nine times, then eight times, etc., and then those pages containing the word only once listed last. Let's build up a list of search words for one product. Take tents for an example. What words describe it? Here are four words - tent, marquee, marquise, bivouac. What are its uses? Camping equipment, holidays, vacations, parties, functions, weddings. What material is it ...

Create a Search Engine Toolbar for Your Web Site

The trend started with Google releasing their toolbar for Internet Explorer. It changed the way we searched by making the search engine available from inside the browser with no need for the user to go to the particular website. And now, Yahoo!, Microsoft, AOL Every big corporation running a search engine has their own toolbar. So much so that if I turn all the toolbars installed on my particular browser, there would be little space left for browsing space! So, how do you as a web publisher (or a content provider) reach out to your clientele? Get them to install a search toolbar that is custom made to suit your website. I found some companies selling tools to make customized toolbars, but the one I am discussing today provides the service for free and integrates custom search results for YOUR SITE. Effective Brand has a complete web-based toolbar generator. Moreover, they host the toolbar for you on their website with a custom page dedicated to it. The initial toolbar generator is a 4...

Make Your Resume Keyword Rich and Scanner Friendly

If you havent looked for a job recently, there are new tactics that hiring professionals are using that you should be aware of before updating your resume. Employers and recruiters increasingly rely on electronic resumes, resume posting boards and job banks to find job candidates. Resumes are either being scanned or input directly into keyword-searchable databases, and accessed when an employer inputs a keyword list of requirements that best describe the position they are seeking to fill. The database searches for keywords describing job titles, responsibilities and descriptions, degree requirements, computer knowledge as well as personality traits. This software scans through thousands of resumes and identifies those that most closely match the imputed keywords. The more keywords or "hits" the software finds in a resume, the more likely it will be read by a HR professional. Keywords are the most important element of a scannable resume. What exactly are keywords? Keywords ar...

Keyword Selection For Website Marketing

Keyword selection is the first step for writing meta tags or the text of your website . If you don't select your keywords wisely and carefully, you would not be able to attract the desired traffic to your website. Simply having meta tags in your website does not guarantee more website visitors or high rankings in the search engines. You need to base these meta tags on carefully selected and targeted keywords. Here are a few guidelines to help you in selecting good and appropriate keywords. Descriptive Keywords The first rule is very simple. The keyword should describe the product or service you are offering. Don't make the mistake of making your company name a keyword. It might be related to your service, but people would hardly search for it (unless you are a big and famous company). For example, I won't put the words "BizTalk4U Consulting" in the meta tags of my website. Instead, I would use "web content writers", which describes the services I of...

How Search Engines Work

The Spider software ‘crawls the web seeking new pages to gather and add to the search engine indices’. This is a figure of speech. In truth, the spider doesn’t do any ‘crawling’ and doesn’t ‘visit’ any web pages. It requests pages from a website in the similar way as Microsoft Explorer, or Firefox or whatever browser you use requests pages to display on your screen. The difference is that the spider doesn’t gather images or visualize designs – it is only interested in text and links AND the URL, from which they come: it doesn’t show anything and it gets as much information as it can in the shortest time possible. A spider loves links because they guide it to other web pages that have the things that it loves, more text, links and URLs. The Index software catches all the Spider can throw at it. The index makes sense of the mass of text, links and URLs using what is called an algorithm - a complex mathematical formula that indexes the words, the pairs of words and so on. Fundamentally,...
